Ultimately sales is the transfer of enthusiasm about the product from you to the would-be client.
Recently I heard a wonderful thought exercise that helps with this perspective.
Here are the particulars:
You get to go back in time and talk to your younger self. They will not be able to recognize you. And that self is living 20 years in the past. Your mission is to convince them to put their money (and any money they can get their hands on) in one of a dozen stocks that have exploded over the last two decades. Do any stocks come to mind? Like maybe Amazon whose stock on May 15, 1997 was $18 a share and, as of this writing, is 3,425.52 per share.
But here are your constraints:
- You can’t tell them who you are.
- You can’t let them know that you are from the future.
- You can’t tell them that the stock is going to have a meteoric rise.
You must get them to believe and buy the stock based on the current marketplace data and a “gut feel” you have about it!
Fun huh?
Just imagine the enthusiasm you could muster to make that sales presentation!
There are many advantages to a sales career:
- You can become a top earner without limits on your income.
- Most companies don’t care about credentials. They just need to know that you can sell the product or service.
- You will have complete job security. Top earners are never fired!
- You can set your own schedule. This is especially true if your position allows you to work from home.
Entry-level sales positions can transition into senior salespeople who train and mentor new employees or even become sales consultants that help manage entire departments.
