Are you building a following for someone else’s platform? Think about this…
What is social media?
Social media are interactive technologies that allow the creation or sharing/exchange of information, ideas, interests, and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks.
This article is not trying to get you to leave social media.
Odds are you won’t.
But if you are marketing a brand (product or service) here are a few things to consider:
- Social Media is not built to promote businesses.
It’s made to connect individuals through topical messages and drive advertising revenue for the platform owner (even if it starts as a “free” platform). - It monopolizes your time
You can’t “set it and forget it”. Though some might argue that it’s a good thing. This is a horrible waste of resources if you are a one-person deep business. Many get caught up in the notion that social media is “FREE”. But isn’t your time worth something? (And what are those rabbit holes that eat up your day (life) costing you?) - It is impossible to measure.
How many likes equal how much income? Hard to say. And if you don’t have a significant following most of your time on social media is a waste of time. - The platform could change.
Take it from the thousands of influencers who had an algorithm change cause their income to plummet. Yes, it’s cliche, but putting all of your eggs in the social media platform can be a big mistake.
