Want to know the real ‘secret’ to lose weight quickly without it costing you a penny?
Appealing to people trying to lose weight is a huge industry.
More than one-third of adults in the United States have obesity. In the United States, 36.5 percent of adults have obesity. Another 32.5 percent of American adults are overweight.
What defines obesity?
If your BMI is 18.5 to <25, it falls within the healthy weight range. If your BMI is 25.0 to <30, it falls within the overweight range. If your BMI is 30.0 or higher, it falls within the obesity range.
Why are Americans so obese?
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that the average American ate almost 20% more calories in the year 2000 than they did in 1983, thanks, in part, to a boom in meat consumption. Today, each American puts away an average of 195lbs of meat every year, compared to just 138lbs in the 1950s. Consumption of added fats also shot up by around two-thirds over the same period, and grain consumption rose 45% since 1970.
Is there anything more confusing than dieting?
We spend over $20 billion annually on weight loss schemes, from diet books and pills up to last-resort surgeries like lap-bands and liposuction. We spend more time at work (usually sitting) and less time in our homes and kitchens than our parents did. Genetics and age do strongly influence metabolism, but as the CDC points out, weight gain and loss is primarily a formula of total calories consumed versus total calories used.
