A single operated newsletter may be the easiest business ventures to set up:
1) Create an account
2) Import your email list (Paidletter shows you how to grow one)
3) Connect to a payment system (we prefer Stripe) to receive payments.
Readers subscribe monthly or annually, and most publications offer a discount for the annual subscription.
Edith is a writer and artist living in Brooklyn. She runs the newsletter Drawing Links and was the founding editor of The Hairpin (RIP). She illustrates The Small Bow and edited the comics section Spiralbound.
In Edith’s words:
I’m Edith Zimmerman, and Drawing Links is a comics newsletter with short illustrated stories about my life. I drew a lot as a kid and then found it again when I stopped drinking. What started as a pre-work morning ritual (drawing as a journal) has become my main occupation. In 2019 I quit my job to start this newsletter! Before that, I’d been sharing comics on Instagram.
After the gyms closed and the country went on lockdown, a friend invited a group from around the country to join a virtual run club on an app called Strava. I’d never heard of it, but I got the gist—it tracks where you run, via GPS, and uploads everyone’s times into a group feed, like an Instagram for workouts. At first I declined, because I thought I couldn’t run.
