Is a Single Operated Newsletter Better than Software?

Marc Andreessen said that software is eating the world – but for one-person deep businesses a paid newsletter may be better.

In 2011, Silicon Valley entrepreneur and investor Marc Andreessen famously wrote the startling essay, Why Software is Eating the World, in which he described how emerging companies built on software were swallowing up whole industries and disrupting previously dominant brand name corporations.

2011 was more than a decade ago and things are changing!

When it comes to business the typical advantages of software as a service (Saas) include:

  • Lower up-front cost
  • Quick set up and deployment
  • Easy upgrades
  • Accessibility
  • Scalability

The SaaS model is being modified by one-person deep business owners to develop single operated newsletters.

COVID radically changed the way individuals view and approach the income model.

In the process of needing employees to work from home, individuals started to experience epiphanies.

What is an Epiphany?
Defined as a moment in which you suddenly see or understand something in a new or very clear way.

The Big Quit!
Many individuals preferred controlling their schedules at home and didn’t want to go back to (unsafe) office environments. Mothers and caregivers also saw the immediate benefits of being more available.

According to Wikipedia:
The Great Resignation, also known as the Big Quit, is an economic trend in which employees voluntarily resigned from their jobs en masse, beginning in early 2021, primarily in the United States.

A single operated newsletter lets individuals leverage the CENTS model:

C – Control – to create true financial freedom you must control the “product”.

E – Entry – or more properly put: “create a barrier to entry”. This is sometimes called a moat. Your subscriber base becomes that moat.

N – Need – You must create the content that your readers will eagerly pay to access. You can see what content our readers pay to get each week (without needing a credit card):

T – Time – Gives you a way to separate your time (labor) from your income. The only true way to amass wealth.

S – Scale – With a single operated newsletter you immediately have a GLOBAL business!

And unlike software, there’s no worry about a coder stealing your million-dollar idea!
