What is Flow State?
In positive psychology, a flow state, also known as being in the zone, is the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity.
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi defines this state as, “Concentration is so intense that no attention is left over to think about anything irrelevant or to worry about problems. Self-consciousness disappears, and the sense of time becomes distorted.”
The Joy of Work
Entrepreneurs who left life-draining jobs to start their own businesses will often say they can’t believe they waited so long. The elation of setting your own schedule and calling the shots offers a freedom that the job tethered can’t easily imagine.
Working for yourself in this manner will often lead to flow state moments evidenced by:
- Experiences of deep concentration
- Feeling that your work has meaning
- Reveling in happiness while working
